Common Anti-Anxiety MedicationFor the hundred of thousands of people diagnosed with Anxiety or Panic disorders medication is one of the most used forms of treatments prescribed by doctors and therapists alike. For myself, I was on parexotine for quite some time before finding a natural method that worked for me, and helped me to overcome my panic attacks. Though I know first hand that medicating for panic and anxiety disorders can very much help alleviate the symptoms and allow you to function relatively normally again, I feel they are only a crutch. As someone who has suffered for 9 years, I know that after I chose to get off of medication because of the different terrible side-effects that come along with them, the panic returned. This says to me that anti-anxiety medication was only a mask that didn really solve the problem. That being said, for people who are having a terrible time dealing with the initial onslaught of having your first panic attack, and then hundreds of panic attacks that follow, anti-anxiety medication can be a good place to start on your journey to become panic free. If medicating is what you decide to do, and be sure to talk to your Doctor or Therapist first, then I like to make sure that you are informed about the different types of anti-anxiety medication, what their purpose is, and possible side-effects that come from them. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) This type of anti-depressant hasn been on the market for very long. It was first introduced in the 1980 with Prozac. It aim is to help maintain levels of Serotonin, a chemical released by the brain which has shown to be rather low in patients with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and OCD. Some of the more common side-effects include: Sexual Dysfunction, insomnia, and nausea. Examples of SSRI include: Paroxetine (Paxil) Fluoxetine (Prozac) Sertraline (Zoloft) Fluvoxamine (Luvox) Beta BlockersBeta Blockers are more used for controlling the physical symptoms of anxiety and panic, such as rapid heartbeat and shaking. These are considered to have less side-effects than other anti-anxiety medication, however, some people may experience light-headedness, dizziness, decreased heart rate, and insomnia. Examples of Beta Blockers include: Atenolol (Tenormin) Propranolol (Inderal) Benzodiazepines This type of anti-anxiety medication is used for immediate relief of panic. Some choose to take one of these if a panic attack is occurring as they tend to relax muscles, and calm you down. Side effects include: Sexual Dysfunction, clumsiness, dizziness, fatigue, decreased mental sharpness Examples of Benzodiazepines: Lorazepam (Ativan) Alprazolam (Xanax) Diazepam (Valium) Clonazepam (Klonopin) Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) Oxazepam (Serax) Tricyclic Antidepressants Tricyclic Antidepressants are used more for severe depression, however some studies have shown an effectiveness for General Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Some common side-effects for this type of drug are: Dry mouth, insomnia, sedation, weight gain, dizziness, erectile failure and sexual dysfunction. Examples of Tricyclic Antidepressants are: Venlafaxine (Effexor) Nortriptyline (Aventyl) Imipramine (Tofranil) Doxepin (Sinequan) Amitriptyline (Elavil) Desipramine (Norpramin) Clomipramine (Anafranil) As you can see there are many types of drugs on the market for anti-anxiety. How each will affect an individual will vary from case to case. Again, however, it is my personal feeling that these are just a crutch. The most effective way to deal with panic and anxiety is to work with techniques and methods. |
